Greenore Port sail into compliance with technology

In 1963, Greenore Port became the first port in the Republic of Ireland to handle containerised traffic. Situated just inside the entrance to Carlingford Lough, the port is located next to the important Dublin- Belfast Economic Corridor, making it, arguably, the most accessible port on Ireland’s East Coast.

Greenore Port has a long history dating back to the 1870’s and is Ireland’s only privately-owned port. Today owned by the Doyle Shipping Group (DSG) which has operations in all of Ireland’s major ports and provides Terminal Management, Stevedoring, Agency, Warehousing, Fright Forwarding and Ship Repair Services.

What Greenore do

Greenore Port handles general cargo, project cargo and a variety of commodities including; animal feed, fertiliser, coal, steel, timber. The port is the main steel port in Ireland, capable of handling over 250,000MT per annum and handles an average of 400,000MT of dry bulk per annum.
The Doyle Shipping Group take Health and Safety very seriously, prioritising staff safety and setting a goal of zero fatalities and zero serious incidents within the group.

Tasked with overseeing Health and Safety onsite is Niall McCarthy. Niall has been General Manager of Greenore for over 4 years now and understand the challenges faced in such a busy port.

Spreadsheet Management

Niall had been using spreadsheets which were far from ideal and had been searching for a platform where he could compile health and safety information and receive notifications when expiry dates were approaching.

Niall explains “I was previously using spreadsheets to store most expiry dates with the actual documents stored in folders on my computer. When I stumbled across Bluezone Manager I thought it might be able to help and after meeting Stephen [Sheridan] I decided to move forward with Bluezone Manager”.

How has bluezone helped?

Greenore Port have implemented Compliance, Supply Chain and Organisation modules from the Bluezone suite of modules and are using the platform to store and monitor business critical documents, training records for staff, compliance of contractors, assets and equipment, all in one platform which can be accessed from anywhere via any device.

Challenges

When asked about challenges encountered during the implementation of Bluezone Manager Niall stated, “I did not face any major challenges. I found the system easy to use and the Bluezone team were very helpful and respondent to any queries”.

Investing in Health & Safety

Investing heavily into health and safety management and the prevention of accidents, DSG have been rewarded with greater safety awareness, fewer accidents, as well as industry recognition.  DSG has been accredited with the world’s leading management systems for quality assurance and occupational health and safety – ISO 9001:2007; ISO 14001:2004; and OHSAS 18001:2007.

Continuous Improvement

Niall added “Every day we are trying to increase health and safety standards in the company and the Bluezone system ensures that we are up to date with all our records and it gives you confidence that you haven’t missed or forgotten anything”
